M:7 Sports announces no commission fees for NIL offers
CASTOR, Pa., August 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — A BeaverThe Paris-based sports marketing firm is the first of its kind to deny commission fees on name, image and likeness deals brokered for student-athletes.
M:7 Sports – a subsidiary of internationally acclaimed marketing and communications firm M:7 Agency – works with high school and college student-athletes to build their brands and secure NIL deals.
“It’s the right thing to do – this money belongs to the athletes,” said Jim Christiana, CEO of M:7 Sports. “We want to raise the bar for managing recruiting and NIL deals. Promoting, polishing and protecting someone’s personal brand doesn’t entitle you to a reduction in their sponsorship deals. Now that the conversation has moved towards the student-athletes and especially minors, it is time for agencies to end this predatory practice.”
Standard fees for agents who market athletes are between 15% and 20% of the athlete’s contract.
Christiana said a commission structure ensures that only selected athletes receive attention.
Pennsylvania is set to become the 15th state to allow high school athletes to get NIL deals this fall. The PIAA is expected to conduct a second of three readings of its proposed policy in September. Christiana urged other companies to follow M:7’s example.
“I would love for the PIAA to prevent agencies from charging commissions on NIL transactions,” Christiana said. “Companies don’t need to be regulated to do the right thing. Whatever PIAA decides, at least athletes now have the opportunity to select an agency that does the right thing and stands out for the talent of their agency’s creative team.”
