Commission Chairman Cites County Successes | Columns

I was elected to the county commission in 2010. I was vice-chairman for four years and am in my second year as chairman of the board. It has been an honor and a privilege for me to serve the good people of Thomas County. Ours is a unique community. We are very well located and have a strong retail market. We have many attractive features and good school systems. Thomas County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

As a County Commissioner, one of my greatest accomplishments was securing a $ 3 million grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation for the improvement of South Pinetree Boulevard. I also participated in the rehabilitation of the historic courthouse. Thomas County has a vigorous capital improvement program in place, including the construction of new buildings such as the 911 Dispatch Center, Fleet Service Shop and Georgia DOT Maintenance Shop. A community that maintains its public amenities is attractive to newcomers and potential businesses.

The opening of the Ranges in Oakfield last October is another achievement. Through the efforts of Dr Phillip Watt, we received a grant of $ 1.6 million from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to build a state-of-the-art shooting facility. Thomas County staff teamed up with MNR staff to create an attraction like no other.

We believe that good road maintenance is essential for a strong transport system and necessary for continued economic development. Thomas County maintains approximately 400 miles of roads. Since 2006, we have resurfaced 246.41 miles of road, among other road improvements, at a cost of $ 30 million. Over the next three years, we will invest an additional $ 11.0 million in improving county roads. All financed by special local option sales tax (SPLOST) funds.

At the Thomas County government, we look forward to continued success in the future. We have a strong team of employees and officials working for you. We are dedicated professionals who are committed to doing our part to keep Thomasville and Thomas County a special place. We are your friends and neighbors.
